Demon - The Rigger Newcastle-under-Lyme 30th May 2000
The God of Thunder here again to update you on all things Live and Demonic. Several people have said that I was a bit harsh on Shifnal. Possibly. But, I tell it like it is. That is how you know what I say is the truth. If it is good, I'll tell you. If it is execrable bollocks, I'll tell you that too. Not only that, I do it my own inimitable, witty, beautifully written, style of prose. OK, so I've got an ego the size of California, so what? You know you're going to read this anyway. Ooh, that smarts, I think I just cut myself on my rapier wit! But, I digress. You all want to know if is there life in Demonland after Shifnal? In the words my daughter's hero of the hour, Texan wrestler, Stone Cold Steve Austin, "OH HELL YEAH! Demon 3:16 says We just rocked your ass!"
If you went to the gig at Newcastle-Under-Lyme's The Rigger, last night, you should be a happy bunny, albeit one with slightly less hearing than at this time yesterday! The sight of Mike Stone bowing down in front of the stage was worth the price of admission alone, but the band were cooking on gas last night. Boy, did they rock! It was a tough crowd. Tough but fair. The band responded to the audience, the audience responded to the band's efforts and, quite simply, turned it up another notch. I didn't expect that, I have to admit.
At The Robin I was surprised by how tight the band sounded. Their first gig in years but they had obviously been rehearsing hard. At the Shifnal gig, they were good but technical problems with the hired PA and an apathetic audience, that you could feel was sucking the very life out of the room, rarefied the atmosphere to such an extent that I expected oxygen masks to drop from the ceiling at any moment.
The Rigger was an entirely different proposition. A stage that was more akin to an obstacle course and, at last, so many people cheering that my voice was not the only one I could hear.
Demon is a living, (fire)breathing entity. A few people cheering, supporting and interacting makes all the difference. I can only imagine how Sweden will react. Thousands of Swedish Demon fans cheering for Leek's finest. Watch out Saxon, Molly Hatchet and Lynyrd Skynyrd. These guys are going to be a tough act to follow.
OK. So, it is off to Leicester on Saturday. I wasn't going to go to that one but, after last night, well, I might be getting older, but I'm not dead yet! There's a good gig going down at The Half Time Orange so, be there or be rhomboidal! Come and say Hello. I don't bite. Well, not much. Alright there was that one time... Reading Festival '83 it was. Black Sabbath had just gone off stage and, well, if you want to know the rest of the story you'll have to go and see Demon on Saturday, won't you?
A special Hello! to Demetrius from Greece who made a special effort to see Demon last night.
