Rehearsing new material for Spaced Out Donkey September 2000
Back in September 2000, I had been to all the recent set of UK gigs, written some reviews for the Demon website and, because of my geographical proximity to the band, had been and talked to both Mike and Dave on a few occasions, at their respective music shops. Because I was there, and because I was a long-time Demon fan, Mike had played me a couple of the demos of the new tracks that the band had been working on for the new album. I was totally blown away, a) by the new Demon sound and because one of my all-time favourite bands (that I had been trying to find out about for years!) was now right on my doorstep and asking me if I liked these new songs!
I can tell you, the rest of my year was pretty shitty but these guys kept me from going completely mad in 2000.
They had studio time booked in October to lay down the tracks and some rehearsal of the new material was needed because they were still basically just demos and ideas that needed working on. So, one afternoon last September, I went over to hang around with them for the afternoon. Ray played me the demo of a new song that they'd only just put some vocals on. It was really only a middle section and part of a guitar solo but it was obvious that it was going to be a wonderful track. That one became "Cry From the Street". A couple of days earlier, I had visited Mike and we had sat in his car listening to a tape of another new track that they had recorded a demo of: "Child of the Dark Sky". From what I had heard of the new material, it was seriously good - even in this fairly rough stage that was obvious.
Anyway, the pictures are self-explanatory. The band (minus Duncan, who had other committments) ran through early versions of "Never Saw It Coming", "Streetwise Cowboy", "Let Me Out of Here" and ""Where You Coming From?"
