Demon - The Crown Shifnal Nr Telford 27th May 2000
A Saturday night in Shifnal is like nothing else I can describe. Actually, nothing is an excellent description of the Shropshire hamlet.
Certainly, as far as Demon were concerned, nothing more than a handful turned up to witness one of the UK's premier rock bands deliver a fine set in spite of technical hitches and an apathetic audience. I cheered, someone else cheered and that was about it. For me, it was good. I had the pleasure of meeting Mike Stone and the band. I got to see one of my all-time favourite bands for the second time in a week.
What I want to know is, that if Demon play this well when the audience consists of, essentially, me, the bar staff, Mike, whatever vermin are within 10ft of anywhere, and the three fossilised crinkle-cut chips under the deep fat fryer, then will there be a Sweden left for Lynyrd Skynyrd to play to? It should be made a legal requirement for every individual on the planet to see this band. I'm not easily impressed and this lot had 20 years of expectations to live up to, but, I don't go to multiple gigs for just anyone. I do it for Man, John Wetton, and, er, Demon.
If you can get to Newcastle, I'll see you there. I really will have to buy a Demon T-shirt though. Hey Dave, bring one along and I'll buy it! No more Hell on Earth? Well, not much more than Shifnal at any rate. See you all in Newcastle!
