Monsters of Rock - Milton Keynes Bowl 3rd June 2006

‘Well that was back in the day
And if you weren't there
It doesn't matter anyway
Because you wouldn't understand’
Megadeth – Back In The Day

I was there, back in the day. I understand. And, oh, it matters.
As I write this review, I can see the ticket stub on my wall: The very first Monsters of Rock festival at Donington.
Oh, what a glorious day it was.
We did indeed sit in the sun, and the bands did play on: Touch, Riot, Saxon, April Wine, Judas Priest, The Scorpions and Rainbow. The music was outstanding, the toilets were disgusting, but I was 17 and didn’t care about the latter. That first Monsters of Rock event was an outstanding line-up of the some of the best bands of the moment and until last Saturday, no one-day event, that I had attended, had come anywhere close to putting on a bill of that magnitude, in the UK, at any rate. That isn’t to say there haven’t been a couple of Donington bills that were pretty awesome, but I didn’t go to them!!
