The Phuxubtelty EP
- Poor Little Fishy
- Phuxubtlety
- Swingin' The Pasta Bake
Before I even begin this review of The Fire Beneath The Sea's Phuxubtlety EP, I have to confess that I have had privileged access to the recording of the material; I have been privy to the various recordings and mixes for months. These guys are friends of mine and I have been listening to these songs since they were just basic ideas and jams. Now, you may consider that this fact alone makes me biased and unable to provide an objective review. Then again, I have a reputation to think of and it would hardly be in my interests to lie to you. I would say to you that, if you don't believe me, just listen to this EP and form your own decision. You will find that I am not only honest and objective but that you are hearing some incredibly talented musicians creating something very special indeed.
I make no secret of the fact that I think that this band is going to take the music scene by storm in 2014, they have put an incredible amount of work into recording these songs and ensuring that the sound is spot on. When the band in question is a 13-piece outfit, injecting many different styles into their music, such as Hip Hop, Funk, Jazz, Ska, DnB, Afro Beat, and this is not an exhaustive list, trying to get everything balanced and mixed is a long and arduous task that many would have tired of a long time ago. Whether my comments over the last few months have been useful, I know not. What I do know is that when I finally heard these finished mixes I knew, instinctively, that they had got it right. All you need is ears to tell that.
So, to the three songs.
Poor Little Fishy, is one of the first songs I ever heard from this collection of lovable madmen (and woman). The first time I heard it, I didn't know what label to put on it, (I still don't!) but I knew I had found something new, innovative, catchy, addictive, and unlike anything I'd ever heard before. I have been playing various versions on my BearTown Radio shows ever since I first got my hands on it.
Phuxubtlety, I can sum up in one word: EPIC! Anything else is gilding the lily. This track is as mad as a box of hair and the most fun you'll have with your clothes on. If this doesn't make you get up and boogie your sneakers away, I'd suggest visiting a doctor, urgently. In the future, you will tell stories about where you were when you first heard Phuxubtlety.
Swinging The Pasta Bake, is a [relatively] new tune from TFBTS. It does what it says on the packaging. It swings like a hepcat on chairoplane.
What all these tracks share is incredible musicianship, a wild variety of sounds and textures, unbelievable lyrical dexterity, and insanely catchy tunes. Everyone who plays on these songs is at the top of their game and I don't say that lightly.
What do they sound like? Almost impossible to answer. Feature this: five MCs, a female vocalist, 3-piece horn section, rock guitar, jazz bass, scratch DJ, and one of the finest young drummers in the business, they don't sound like anyone else – because there is no other band to compare them to! Their sound is quite unique. Take a leap of faith, visit their website or Facebook page and, just listen. Then, make your purchase.
If you still think I'm yanking your chain about how good The Fire Beneath The Sea is, consider this: On December 20th 2013, I'm putting my money where my mouth is and promoting this band as the headline act at a gig I have arranged. Do you really think I would do that if I didn't believe what you have just read?
For your eardrums.
