Sweden Rock Festival 2009: Blackfoot - 6th June 2009

Setlist: Good Morning / Wishing Well / Morning Dew / I Got A Line On You / Bobby Barth slide solo / Baby Blue / Drum solo / Great Spirit / Fox Chase / Left Turn On A Red Light / Born To Lose > Rollin' And Tumblin' / Fly Away / Highway Song / Train, Train
Due to the time difference and my self-cloning, I arrived during Fox Chase. Last time I saw this band it was the original line-up featuring Ricky Medlocke, Greg T. Walker, Charlie Hargrett, and late drummer, the amazing, Jackson Spires. That line-up was one of the best gigs I’ve ever been to. So, Bobby Barth had some work to do. Now, he’s not exactly new to Blackfoot, having originally joined the band the first time in the ‘80s, but I wasn’t sure about him being the lead man… Sometimes I worry about things I shouldn’t.
With 50% of the original line-up, and another 25% from an ‘80s incarnation these good ol’ boys booted some serious bottom. Blackfoot, as a band, never got the same recognition as Lynyrd Skynyrd (now featuring former Blackfooter Medlocke) or even Molly Hatchet, probably coming out on a par with 38 Special but, let me tell you, this was a superb performance, truly appreciated by an enthusiastic crowd. From Fly Away through Train Train they rocked the packed out SRF throng to its very boots and I was glad that I had come to see them. Train Train was particularly awesome.
If they had been a disappointment I would have been gutted that I missed the end of Riot’s set, but I was just relieved that I’d caught the second half of Blackfoot’s performance. I could have watched them for another hour or two with no persuading at all.
However, my day still had one more band that I wanted to catch…
