USS Constitution - 10th April 2005

The USS Constitution is a very impressive sight indeed. I'd never even seen a big old sailing boat like this before, let alone stepped on board one. Apparently, this here dinghy, is still actually a commissioned vessel and is the oldest serving warship afloat in the world. I can't see them actually using it in anger, mind you.
The nickname 'Old Ironsides' came about because in one exchange during the War of 1812 (against the Brits, as it happens) the cannonballs bounced off the solid oak hull and some wag remarked, "Huzzah! Her sides are made of iron!" I sincerely hope that jolly Jack Tar got a cannonball up his ass.
